We begin with an overview of our insides. You are a spirit, you live in a body, and you have a soul.

 You may want to take an assessment of where you are and where you want to go; it's up to you.

The Holy Spirit talks to our personal spirit...

Your personal spirit is a place in us that cannot be touched by anything out in the world because it lives in the presence of God. It is where we "abide." It is eternal and communes with God himself . Wisdom from God comes through the personal spirit.  Wisdom is knowing what to do; the ability to make the right choices/goals and achieve them through Godly means. Skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it. 

Your soul has within it your mind, will, and emotions. (Your personal spirit has mind, will, and emotion also, but we'll talk about that later.) Anyway, your soul only has knowledge gained by your previous experience. Without wisdom from God there is nothing new you can do that you haven't done before. Your soul wants to meet God on its own terms and fights for control as it did before salvation. (When you are born again, your personal spirit is revitalized or reborn) The soul must submit to the spirit man if not it becomes either carnal or flesh. Soul power has to be broken or you cannot serve effectively. Carnality is the sinful appetite of the soul when we run our lives through the soul rather than our personal spirit. We want to live for God but refuse to relinquish control to Him. We become religious--live to please ourselves and call it godliness. Flesh is the sinful appetite of the body--self gratification such as overeating, sex, drugs, alcohol, shopping...whatever pleases the flesh.  The soul and the body are against the spirit and are incapable of guiding us. We are at war with ourselves.
